Suspicious package causes road closure in Centerville

CENTERVILLE, Utah — Emergency personnel responded to a call about a suspicious package found next to a fire hydrant on Main Street in Centerville around 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

South Davis Metro Fire said they are treating it as a hazardous material incident, and Main Street was temporarily closed from Parrish Lane to Chase Lane while they investigated. They asked the public to avoid the area in the meantime.

Main street was reopened sometime around 4 p.m. after it was determined the package was not an explosive device. The hazardous material team checked out the package, and it was determined to be flour.

Two injured after dump truck rolls in North Salt Lake

NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah – Two people were injured after a dump truck carrying a load of dirt rolled over when its brakes failed in North Salt Lake on Wednesday morning.

It happened at near 39 East Eagleridge Drive. The dump truck was traveling westbound down a hill.

The driver attempted to downshift to slow the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. The dump truck jumped a curb into a parking lot and hit another truck, pinning a man.

“As he is rolling, the individual in this white truck here sees it happening,” said Thomas DeCarlo, North Salt Lake Police Department. “[He] jumps out of his truck, tries to run away. As he is running away, the truck slams into him and his own truck when he was outside of his vehicle.”

Both the man and the driver of the dump truck were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Officials said they are both in stable condition with minor injuries.

Clearfield JROTC shooters advance in competition

LAYTON, Utah — The Western JROTC Air Rifle Championship is being held at the Davis Conference Center in Layton.

This event was for the Army and Air Force branches of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. The event for the Navy and Marines branches takes place February 21-23.

Brad Donaho, program coordinator for the civilian marksmanship program, described the event.

“This is [an] Olympic style air rifle event fired at 10 meters with air rifles, .177 caliber rifles, but not the typical ones you’re going to find at Wal-Mart,” he said.

One team from Clearfield High School, along with teams from California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Alaska, were selected to move on to the national competition.

Farmington family frustrated with police visit

A Farmington family said a Police Officer entered their home in the middle of the night Monday all because their garage door was open.

The family said they think the officer had no right to come inside, but police paint a different picture of what happened.

“It’s a pretty, nice peaceful neighborhood,” said Sheryl Bloyer, who has lived in her neighborhood at 1099 south and 55 west for 12 years.

Bloyer said she was in a deep sleep when she was jolted awake around 2:30 a.m.

“I walked down the hall, and I hear someone shouting ‘Farmington Police,’” she said.

Her son Tyler, who lives downstairs, had just fallen asleep but woke up after hearing the officer’s voice.

“He was just treating us as though we were criminals,” Sheryl Bloyer said. “I couldn’t see his badge.”

Tyler Bloyer said he wondered if the man in their home was actually a law enforcement officer.

Local hospitals focus on cardiac care

BOUNTIFUL, Utah — Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and Mountain Star Hospitals are putting a huge emphasis on heart care.

When it comes to heart attacks, Cydney Vandyke and the employees at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful have a saying: “Time is muscle.”

Bill Swiler said speedy treatment is imperative when someone suffers a heart attack.

“’A heart attack is a blockage of blood supply to the heart, which is muscle, and the sooner we can get that blood supply reopened and get blood back to the heart the more muscle we can save and the more heart tissue we can save,” he said.

Lake View, along with four other Mountain Star hospitals, have become the first accredited chest pain centers in Utah, which means that all employees are certified to take care of chest pain and cardiac related illnesses.

Vandyke said this means they can give patients better care faster.
