Are You Ready to Be a Quitter? Tobacco users get chance to star in commercials, document their fight

If you’re ready to quit using tobacco products and want to share your story with Utah, now is your chance. The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP) is hosting a casting call to recruit current Utah tobacco users for its new, statewide reality TV campaign, ‘Be A Quitter.’

Anyone who is thinking about quitting in 2013 can visit www.beaquitterutah.com and tell their story in 250 words or less for a chance to star in the commercials. Those who do will receive extra quit support and motivation, and will be an inspiration to others who are trying to quit.

Participants will receive a stipend plus a tablet device to help them document their quitting process, including struggles and successes, through social media and video updates. The campaign will cast 8-10 participants from across Utah who represent a range of ages and types of tobacco use.

Eagle Bay elem student starts candy drive for Sandy victims

FARMINGTON -- According to Davis School District, one of their students created a campaign to donate Halloween candy to victims of Hurricane Sandy.

He is a 6th grade student at Eagle Bay Elementary who came up with the idea after deciding he did not need all the candy he got for Halloween.

The district said he contacted the Red Cross and they agreed to mail the candy for him. Additionally, the school’s PTA has sponsored a Unity in the Community project where families signed up to work in the Bountiful Food Pantry.

The pantry was so excited that families would want to help, it is using Eagle Bay Elementary as a pilot school to see if it is successful in helping.

If it works, they say they are going to launch a Unity in the Community campaign and advertise through the paper for other families to sign up and help at the pantry.

Hundreds ride to fight Parkinson's disease

KAYSVILLE, Utah - Hundreds of people participated in the Pedal for Parkinson's ride in Davis County on Saturday.

The fundraiser earned more than $10,000 to fight Parkinson's disease.

Meredith Smith organizes the event to honor her mother who has the disease. She says Parkinson's gets less attention than some other causes because only 4 percent of sufferers are under 50 years old.

"It's pretty challenging in your later years when you have Parkinson's to come up with events like this...so it's up to the caregivers, the family and the friends to take on events like this," Smith said.

The money raised goes to the Utah chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association.

Utah KeyBank employees perform community volunteer work

This is a news release from KeyBank.

More than 8,400 employees of KeyCorp nationwide participated in the company’s 22nd annual day of volunteer community service on Thursday, May 24.  Key staff spent the afternoon volunteering for a wide array of community service projects in neighborhoods across the nation.  Two-thirds of branches were closed for the event.

In Utah, more than 150 KeyBank employees volunteered their time at 9 projects throughout the state. As they did for last year’s event, KeyBank focused projects on helping the hungry because food and cash donations typically taper off during June, July and August, and state food pantries always experience extra need during the summer months.

Davis Area CVB Promotes 'Tourism in your own Backyard' for all Davis County elementary students.

In 2005 the Davis Area CVB began a campaign “Have a Summer of Fun in Davis County” to help educate elementary students about tourism in Davis County by sending home over 35,000 flyers to every student at the end of the school year. The flyers list attractions, main events and cultural arts for students to visit through out the summer.

In 2006 a contest was added to encourage visitation and participation. All children that visited each of the venues received a validation stamp, brought in their flyer to the Davis Area CVB and received a Cool Prize. Their name was then entered into a Grand Prize Drawing to be eligible to win one of four Grand Prizes, a Lagoon Season Pass or a Cherry Hill Season Pass.

The campaign and contest have had a great response over the years not only from the kids but from the parents as well. This year the Davis Area CVB will be distributing over 43,000 flyers to the school district as well as the Davis County charter schools.
