SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is giving more than $600,000 to Davis County for affordable housing.
HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan says the funding will be used by the county for the improvement of public facilities and rehabilitation of housing.
Donovan says the money comes from Community Development Block Grant funding, which was reduced by about 16 percent last year. The cuts were made because of the growing national deficit.
Donovan says the funding decisions were more difficult because of the budget cuts. But he says the grants are essential to help homeless people and support long-term disaster recovery around the country.
Donovan says the grants also provide an important engine for job growth and economic recovery.
