More horse herpes cases confirmed in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Authorities say seven cases of the horse herpes virus have been confirmed in Utah, with as many as eight more suspected cases.

Utah state veterinarian Bruce L. King says Monday a second horse has been euthanized after it could not stand in its stall over the weekend.

King says four facilities are under quarantine orders because of horses infected with Equine Herpes Virus-1. The horses are in Kane, Box Elder, Davis and Utah counties.

The virus began spreading after an event last month in Ogden. More than 30 horses in nine states and Canada have been infected and at least seven infected horses have died.

The Utah Department of Agriculture is not recommending cancellations of events featuring horses.

Dog obedience regional qualifier in Farmington

Golden Spike Dog Obedience Club (GSDOC) will host a National Obedience Invitational Regional qualifier March 25-27 at the Legacy Arena, Davis County Fairgrounds, in Farmington.

The show will run from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. each day. The event is free to the public.

Utah's Winter Inversions Take Toll On People with Asthma

 

(Salt Lake City, UT) - In an effort to understand Utah's infamous temperature inversions and how they impact people with asthma, the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) and its partners analyzed changes in pollution levels during winter inversions (2006-2008) and correlations with asthma-related visits to emergency departments (EDs) in Salt Lake County.

 

Major findings of the analysis by the UDOH Asthma and Environmental Epidemiology Programs, the National Weather Service, and other partners included:

  No association was found between PM2.5 pollutants and ED visits for asthma, including up to three days after exposure.

  PM2.5 pollutant levels are generally higher during inversions, but tend to exceed EPA standards primarily during inversions lasting 3-4 days or longer.

  People with asthma are 42% more likely to go to an ED during the 5th-7th days of a continuous inversion compared to days with no inversion.
