Lower gate on Farmington Canyon road open

Farmington Canyon road (Forest Service Road #007) is open to the intersection with the Francis Peak road (Forest service Road #009) and Skyline Drive
(Forest Service Road #008).

Due to snow and wet conditions, the Francis Peak road and Skyline Drive remain under a seasonal closure and gates will be locked until June 1st, weather permitting.

Due to flood damage in the spring of 2011, Farmington Canyon road was closed for public safety and to prevent further resource damage.  Flood repair work was completed in early December 2012 and the road has been open for winter recreation use.

Please remember that during spring conditions roads and trails are wet and muddy, and can
sustain resource damage from recreation use.

Girls’ running program expands to Utah, Davis and Summit Counties

According to statistics, only 11 percent of young girls get the recommended hour a day of recommended physical activity -- compared with 42 percent of boys.

Girls on the Run (GOTR), a non-profit organization, wants to change those statistics.  They understand that exercise not only increases the health of our girls, but builds their self-esteem and confidence as well.

GOTR has had great success with its after-school program that is designed to promote physical, emotional and social development in 3rd – 5th grade girls through running and mentoring.  The program provides team coaches and individual ‘running buddies’ to more than 800 girls in Salt Lake County as they train over 12 weeks for the annual 5k at Sugar House Park each spring and fall.

BLM seeks volunteers for raptor inventory nest survey

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Utah Salt Lake Field Office is seeking volunteers to assist with the annual Raptor Inventory Nest Survey (RINS) in northern Utah.  Participation as a volunteer does not require special experience or education, and the BLM will provide training.  In fact, the only prerequisites are a love for the outdoors, especially Utah’s beautiful west desert, and a sincere desire to help the magnificent birds of prey that call our state home.

NSL considering naming area "blighted"

NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah - North Salt Lake is considering designating a large patch of land as blighted.

The area that is being considered is land bordered by North Salt Lake's Center Street, Redwood Road, I-215 and the Legacy Parkway.

City leaders say calling an area blighted isn't as bad as it sounds. It would allow them to access funding that could kick-start redevelopment in the area.

They say they are considering a mixed-use development for the area. It would combine residential, commercial and office space.

"It's one of the last undeveloped areas that has access to the freeways as close to I-215 as this one does. It's a good piece of property. It's a big piece of property," said Barry Edwards.

City Hall says the property owner is considering selling the land to a developer.

Jordan River Parkway trail maps now available

SALT LAKE CITY - A map of the Jordan River Parkway trail system is now available.

A complete outlook of the trail system was designed and printed to help the National Park Service Rivers and Trails Conservation Assistance program.

An event at Oxbow Park James Madison trailhead took place on Wednesday to announce where residents can get a hard copy of the map.

"It goes from lake to lake to Utah County and to Davis County. It's a great centerfold your children can be proud to have," said Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon.

The new map highlights trailheads, public transit areas, urban parks and conservation areas.
