Former drama teacher gets one year for fondling student

A former drama teacher was sentenced to one year in jail Wednesday after pleading guilty to forcible sexual abuse..

62-year-old James Stokes admitted to fondling a 14-year-old student? at Legacy Preparatory Academy.

The judge suspended a fifteen year prison term after the victim and her family forgave him in court. Both prosecuting and defense attorneys believe that Stokes' situation is atypical and he will be unlikely to become a repeat offender.

"I'm positive that Mr. Stokes will do well," said Ken Brown, defense attorney, "That he's not going to re-offend; that he's not going to be back in the criminal justice system."?

"In this case the acts were very different than some of the other cases that we've handled and iI tried to explain that in there with the judge and the judge was in agreement with that," said prosecutor Richard Larsen.

Stokes was fired from Legacy Preparatory Academy last August after charges were filed.
